Blackmagic Design, maker of video signal processors and the colour-grading tool DaVinci Resolve, has jumped into the camera market with a product that is still baffling me hours after seeing it in action. The specs seem almost too good for the price point.Blackmagic claims 13 stops latitude from a CMOS sensor, recording to 12 bit raw (Adobe CinemaDNG raw – uncompressed) or ProRes 422, or DNxHD, in-camera to SSD. It records raw format at 2.5K resolution. The sensor is APS-C sized and has a Canon EF or EZ mount. Here’s the best part though: they will include a full copy of Davinci Resolve ($1000) and UltraScope ($600) for $2995. That makes the camera body $1400. Like I said, it seems too good to be true.
